Pontevedra allocates funds to study recovery of abandoned Remesar village

The Diputación de Pontevedra has announced a 300,000 euro investment for 2027 to conduct a technical study on the recovery of Remesar, an abandoned village in the Rodeiro municipality. The project aims to evaluate how to rehabilitate existing housing and restore residential activity in the settlement, located in the parish of Carboentes.

Remesar has been largely uninhabited for over 25 years, with official INE data showing its last population record in 2002. The initiative is designed as a pilot program to address rural depopulation, aging populations, and the lack of generational replacement in Galicia. The study will determine the number of recoverable homes, necessary investment, administrative pathways, and urban planning frameworks required for rehabilitation.

Provincial president Luis López stated that the project is intended to serve as a reference model for other abandoned rural nuclei throughout the province. Beyond housing, the project seeks to mitigate risks associated with depopulation, such as the increased threat of forest fires in unmaintained territories.
