Pontevedra municipalities implement new waste management systems
Municipalities in the Pontevedra region are implementing new waste management systems to improve sustainability and urban cleanliness.
In Tomiño, a door-to-door biowaste collection service for specific producers will launch on October 1. The initiative begins with 24 participating establishments that generate significant organic matter. The program, part of the ‘Grilo Verde’ model, aims to prevent approximately 400 tons of biowaste from being sent to Sogama, potentially reducing annual CO2 emissions by 85 tons and generating economic savings.
In Pontevedra, the historic center will replace 35 permanent containers with 40 mobile ‘emerging islands’ starting October 5. These containers will be placed daily between 18:00 and 00:00 at eight fixed locations to collect five types of recyclables: biowaste, light packaging, paper and cardboard, glass, and residual waste. Managed by PreZero, this system is designed to improve the city's image, reduce odors, and enhance daily cleanliness in monumental areas.
