Pontevedra Region Faces Red Heat Alert as Temperatures Near 40 °C

The Galician government announced that on Friday it will activate a level‑3 (red) heat‑wave alert for the interior of Pontevedra, with a level‑2 (orange) alert for parts of north‑west Galicia and interior A Coruña. The alert follows an influx of hot air from North Africa, which is expected to push daytime highs above 35 °C and reach nearly 40 °C in some locations such as Vilagarcía de Arousa and Ourense.

The safety measures include suspending all federated outdoor sports activities and the ‘Xogade’ program in affected municipalities. Health officials advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure between 12:00 and 18:00, and seek cool, ventilated spaces. Forecasts indicate the extreme temperatures will continue through the weekend, with a possible tropical night in Vigo where lows may stay above 20 °C. A cold air mass over Portugal on Sunday could bring more unsettled weather to Galicia, but the heat is not expected to subside significantly in the immediate term.
