Pontevedra viticulturists urged to aerate grape bunches before September harvest

The Fitopathological Station Areeiro, a public service of the Diputación de Pontevedra, has issued an advisory to grape growers in the province. Based on observations of vineyards this week, technicians recommend manually or mechanically aerating grape clusters ahead of the harvest expected to begin in early September.

The advice stems from the current phenological stage—many vines have reached full colouration—and from unusually high relative humidity (around 80 %). Aeration helps reduce water accumulation on berries and lowers the risk of fungal diseases such as botrytis, which could compromise the crop. Technicians stress that growers must evaluate each parcel individually, considering orientation, grape variety, and load.

Forecasts predict warm daytime temperatures of 25‑29 °C and mild nights, supporting the projected harvest window for the main varieties Albariña and Godello. The station’s bulletin underscores the importance of careful canopy management and cluster ventilation to preserve grape quality.
