Pontianak pneumonia cases rise 20% due to forest fire haze

Pneumonia cases at Bhayangkara Anton Soedjarwo Hospital in Pontianak have increased by approximately 10 to 20 percent. This rise in lung infections is attributed to deteriorating air quality caused by forest and land fires (karhutla).

Hospital Chief Kombes Pol drg. Josep Ginting stated that the facility is preparing for further increases by securing medical personnel, equipment, and inpatient rooms, while also coordinating with other hospitals.

Medical specialists noted that prolonged exposure to haze can exacerbate respiratory conditions and lead to pneumonia. Vulnerable groups, particularly children and the elderly, are at the highest risk. Early symptoms include coughing and sneezing, which can progress to shortness of breath if exposure continues. Health officials advise residents to limit outdoor activities and wear masks when air quality is poor.
