Pontianak air quality reaches dangerous levels due to forest fires

Pontianak has faced severe air quality degradation due to forest and land fires (karhutla) in West Kalimantan. During late August and early September 2026, PM2.5 concentrations reached dangerous levels, with some readings recorded at 763, significantly exceeding the World Health Organization's 24-hour safety threshold of 15 micrograms per cubic meter.

In response to the hazardous conditions, various groups have organized relief efforts. The Aliansi Mahasiswa Pontianak Peduli, a coalition of several local universities, distributed 2,000 masks to motorists and pedestrians. Additionally, LAZISNU and local students have provided masks and mineral water to residents.

Heavy rainfall between September 4 and September 5, 2026, has provided temporary relief by helping to clear the thick haze and suppress hotspots, leading to improved air quality for local residents.
