Pontypool residents petition council over dangerous speeding

A 17-year-old resident, Libby Smith, presented a petition to the Torfaen Borough Council calling for urgent road safety measures in Pontypool. The petition, signed by 104 residents, addresses speeding concerns on Hospital Road in Pontnewynydd, as well as Lower Leigh Road and Leigh Road.

Despite an existing 20mph speed limit, residents report that excessive speeds persist, noting that speeds on Hospital Road have reportedly increased following recent pothole repairs. The petition cites several dangerous incidents, including pedestrians being struck by vehicles, animals being run over, and numerous vehicle collisions resulting in written-off cars.

To mitigate these risks, the petition requests the implementation of traffic calming measures, speed warning signs, targeted enforcement of the 20mph limit, and an evaluation of a potential one-way system. The presentation was supported by Reform UK councillor Stuart Keyte.
