Pony.ai unveils Level 4 autonomous electric robotruck in Germany

Pony.ai unveiled its fourth-generation Level 4 autonomous heavy goods vehicle at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, Germany. Developed in collaboration with GAC Commercial Vehicle, the fully electric robotruck is built on the T9 platform and is designed to operate without human intervention in specific zones such as ports or fixed logistics routes.

The new model features a significant reduction in costs, with material expenses for the autonomous driving system reportedly down by 70 percent compared to previous generations. This was achieved by utilizing a unified architecture and a domain controller shared with the company’s seventh-generation robotaxis. The vehicle is equipped with 25 sensors, including nine Lidar units, three radars, and 13 cameras, supported by six-fold redundancy in critical systems like steering, braking, and power supply.

Pony.ai aims to expand into European and Middle Eastern markets over the next two years, targeting regions with high labor costs or severe driver shortages. The company is currently in discussions with European governments and port authorities regarding road testing. Mass production of the model is expected to begin in 2026.
