Poção Renda Renascença receives Geographical Indication status
The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) has officially granted Geographical Indication (GI) status to the Renda Renascença produced in Poção, a municipality in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, Brazil. The registration, specifically in the category of Indication of Source, recognizes the reputation and traditional quality of the handmade lace produced in the area.
The recognition follows a collaborative effort between Sebrae Pernambuco and the Pernambuco Economic Development Agency (Adepe), with the application submitted by the Association of Artisans of Renda Renascença of Poção. The approval process was completed in approximately four months.
This certification aims to protect traditional knowledge, prevent improper appropriation, and add commercial value to the local craft, which has been a generational tradition in the region since the 1930s. With this addition, Brazil reaches a total of 171 registered Geographical Indications.
