Poor road conditions linked to over 1,000 accidents in 2025

The driver advocacy group Dvuelta reports that poor condition of interurban roads was a factor in nearly 1,100 traffic accidents involving victims during 2025. These calculations are based on data from the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), which has stated since 2021 that road deterioration is present in approximately 3% of all road accidents.

Applying this 3% figure to the 35,975 total road accidents recorded in 2025, Dvuelta estimates that approximately 1,646 people were affected, including fatalities and both hospitalized and non-hospitalized injured persons. However, specific casualty counts per accident type are not available in official statistics.

The data excludes accidents in Catalonia and the Basque Country, as those regions hold transferred competencies regarding traffic management. Dvuelta is demanding that the DGT provide detailed public information regarding road-related accidents, including the specific locations, the number of casualties, and the administrative bodies responsible for the affected road sections.
