Poços de Caldas advances rare earth mining oversight and research
Developments regarding rare earth mining in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, are advancing through both regulatory oversight and proposed scientific research initiatives. The Rare Earth Committee has requested that a mining company provide technical clarifications within seven days regarding ten priority points raised by the local community. These concerns include safety, housing, noise impacts, water resources, and infrastructure investments.
Simultaneously, the Education, Science, and Technology Commission of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais is debating the creation of the Center for Intelligence and Advanced Technology in Rare Earths (Citar). This proposed institution, a partnership between the Federal Institute of South Minas and the Federal University of Alfenas, aims to strengthen scientific research, technological innovation, and environmental monitoring related to critical mineral exploitation in the region. The project's implementation is subject to funding from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development.
