Pop Art exhibition opens in Bucharest to celebrate U.S. 250th anniversary

The Art Safari New Museum in Bucharest has opened the “U. S. Pop Art: Life in Colors” exhibition, tracing six decades of American Pop Art and its global impact. The event is part of the U.S. Embassy’s “Freedom 250” celebrations, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

The exhibition explores the evolution of the movement, from Andy Warhol’s “Factory” and the imagery of Tom Wesselmann to the street-inspired works of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It also examines the European Nouveau Réalisme response and concludes with contemporary pieces by Takashi Murakami and Damien Hirst.

U.S. Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg opened the exhibit, noting that Pop Art served as a declaration that “art belongs to everyone.” He also honored the legacy of Ileana Sonnabend, a Bucharest-born gallerist who played a pivotal role in introducing artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns to European audiences. The exhibition is scheduled to run through December 20, 2026.
