Pope Francis and Emmanuel Macron warn of war in Europe

Pope Francis and French President Emmanuel Macron issued warnings regarding the return of war to Europe during a meeting in Metz. Speaking at the Robert Schuman Congress Center under the theme ‘At the roots of Europe for peace and unity’, the leaders called for a commitment to fundamental principles of peace, dialogue, and international law.

Pope Francis cautioned against the ‘illusion of armaments’ and warned that international relations risk increasing barbarization as deception replaces trust. He emphasized that seeking peace should not be confused with naive pacifism, instead advocating for courageous negotiations and multilateral cooperation.

President Macron reaffirmed France’s unwavering support for Ukraine and the defense of international law following Russian military aggression. He warned against rising nationalism and divisions, urging Europe to strengthen its sovereignty, protect democracy from disinformation, and maintain economic independence through innovation and domestic investment.
