Pope Francis calls on EU to act on migrant deaths during Lampedusa visit

During a visit to the island of Lampedusa, Pope Francis highlighted the ongoing tragedy of migrants dying in the Mediterranean, stating that "the dead in this sea are victims of both decisions made and decisions missed." He urged the European Union to adopt a comprehensive rescue and integration plan for people fleeing war, persecution and poverty.

The EU institutions gave only a muted response, reiterating a generic commitment to saving lives at sea without detailing concrete measures. Since the closure of the EU naval mission Operation Sophia in 2020, the bloc lacks a combined anti‑trafficking and rescue operation, even as the International Organization for Migration reports at least 865 deaths or disappearances in the central Mediterranean in 2026.

Italian and European politicians debated the Pope’s appeal, with some emphasizing stricter migration controls while others called for more humanitarian action, underscoring the divide over how to balance security and human dignity.
