Pope Francis honored with new names for public spaces in Argentina and Spain
Various legislative and municipal bodies are moving to rename public spaces in honor of Pope Francis.
In Argentina, Buenos Aires Province Senator Alex Campbell has introduced a bill to rename Provincial Route 7 as ‘Papa Francisco’. The 53-kilometer route, which passes through Morón, Ituzaingó, Merlo, General Rodríguez, and Luján, is frequently used for pilgrimages to the Basilica of Luján. The proposal aims to honor the Argentine pontiff’s legacy of dialogue and care for the vulnerable.
In Spain, the Madrid City Council has approved renaming Caramuel Park in the Latina district to ‘Parque del Papa Francisco I-Caramuel’. This decision follows a commitment by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida to honor the Pope’s immediate predecessors. This follows a similar initiative to name a park after Benedict XVI in the San Blas-Canillejas district.
