Pope Leo XIV urges peace, stability and justice as Ceuta faces migrant crisis FAST-MOVING
Pope Leo XIV addressed the Angelus on 2 August, saying he follows the “alarming situation” in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta with concern and asks for God’s help through the intercession of Our Lady of Africa to find solutions of peace, stability and justice. He also called for prayers for an end to wars worldwide and remembered the victims of conflict, especially children, the elderly and the sick.
Between 30 and 31 July, up to 60 000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, many by swimming the breakwater. Spanish authorities say most have been returned, but dozens died – official counts range from 71 to 84, with the Spanish government reporting at least 72 fatalities. Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas described the episode as a humanitarian and social emergency, and Spanish officials are accelerating the processing of irregular entrants for prompt return. The crisis has prompted an urgent meeting of EU interior ministers to discuss the situation.
