Pope John Paul II commemorated on anniversary of pontificate

The Catholic Church commemorates the feast of Saint John Paul II on October 22, marking the anniversary of the start of his pontificate in 1978. Born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920, he served as the 264th Pope, leading the Church for nearly 27 years until his death in 2005.

Known as the “Pilgrim Pope,” he traveled to 129 countries and was a significant figure in global geopolitics, particularly for his role in influencing political shifts in Eastern Europe and supporting religious freedom. His legacy includes the establishment of World Youth Day and a strong emphasis on interreligious dialogue and the dignity of human life.

His life was marked by significant events, including surviving an assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square in 1981, after which he famously forgave his attacker. He was beatified by Benedict XVI in 2011 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2014 following recognized miracles.
