Pope John Paul II's historic visits to Croatia

Pope John Paul II visited Croatia on three separate occasions: 1994, 1998, and 2003. His first visit, occurring on September 10-11, 1994, took place only three years after the Holy See recognized Croatian independence. At the time, parts of the country were still under occupation due to ongoing conflict.

The 1994 visit was marked by a mass celebrated at the Zagreb Hippodrome, attended by nearly one million people, where the Pope called for peace and reconciliation. His second visit in 1998 included the canonization of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac in Marija Bistrica and a mass in Split to mark the city's 1700th anniversary.

His final visit in 2003 included stops in several cities, including Krk, Rijeka, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Osijek, and Đakovo. Throughout these visits, the Pope's presence served as both a religious milestone and a significant diplomatic affirmation of Croatia's international standing.
