Pope Leo consecrates Sagrada Família's tallest tower in Barcelona

Pope Leo presided over the consecration of the new central spire, known as the Christ Tower, at Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia on 10 June 2026. The ceremony marked the completion of the world’s tallest church, reaching 172.5 metres, and was attended by large crowds in the basilica and in nearby cities such as Madrid.

Construction of the Sagrada Familia began nearly 140 years ago under architect Antoni Gaudí, who died in 1926. After his death, successive architects continued the work in Gaudí’s style, and the basilica has become one of Europe’s most visited tourist attractions. The Pope’s visit to Spain also included stops in Madrid and the Canary Islands, where he met with local officials and migrants.
