Pope Leo XIV calls for unity amid global polarization

Pope Leo XIV met with approximately 100 bishops associated with the Focolare Movement at the Vatican to address the challenges of a fragmented and polarized global society. During the audience, the Pontiff emphasized the urgent need for the Church to serve as a symbol of human unity, citing racism, religious intolerance, and physical violence as significant obstacles to peace.

The Pope highlighted the spiritual legacy of Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement, as a vital guide for navigating contemporary cultural fractures. He argued that the solution to global divisions does not lie in creating more committees or projects, but in returning to the spiritual source of unity found in the Holy Trinity.

Addressing Western societies specifically, Pope Leo XIV expressed concern over the rise of extreme individualism. He noted that traditional social networks, such as family and community, are being replaced by fragmentation, where freedom is often misinterpreted as absolute autonomy. He observed that despite the emphasis on individual liberty, many people feel less free to express their true selves due to a fear of judgment or social non-conformity.
