Pope Leo XIV addresses human dignity and modern witnesses of faith

During a general audience on September 16, Pope Leo XIV addressed the importance of human dignity and the role of humanity as the central purpose of social institutions. Reflecting on the document Gaudium et spes, the Pope emphasized that human relationships must be built on fraternity and the common good, warning against the risks of individualism and the potential for technology and artificial intelligence to make human connections more superficial or algorithmic.

Additionally, the Pope met with participants of a conference regarding new martyrs and witnesses of faith. He noted that many modern witnesses of faith are those who have sacrificed their lives due to abuses of power or criminal organizations while standing against injustice in the name of the Gospel. He clarified that the concept of ‘witnesses of faith’ is broader than formal canonization processes, focusing on the victim's loyalty to Christ and their perseverance in doing good amidst a world often dominated by violence and power.
