Pope Leo XIV defends human dignity as an inherent divine gift

Pope Leo XIV addressed the fundamental nature of human dignity during a General Audience at Saint Peter's Square and through recent community engagements. Drawing from the Second Vatican Council's pastoral constitution, Gaudium et Spes, the Pontiff emphasized that human dignity is an inherent gift from God that does not depend on an individual's wealth, social role, physical capabilities, or personal choices.

During his catechesis, the Pope warned against the 'objectification' of the human body, stating that reducing the body to an object for arbitrary use is a denial of personhood. He identified intelligence, conscience, and freedom as the three essential expressions of this dignity. He further cautioned that while the historical recognition of fundamental rights is a significant achievement, the path toward full realization must overcome modern contradictions and the 'corruption of the human heart.'

In a separate event, the Pope participated in the third edition of the Vatican Family Feast, where he described the family as 'the mirror in which God looks at himself,' highlighting the spiritual importance of the domestic environment.
