Pope Leo XIV announces 2027 World Communications Day theme

Pope Leo XIV has announced the theme for the 61st World Communications Day, to be celebrated on May 9, 2027. The chosen theme is ‘A New Gaze: Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait’.

The Dicastery for Communication released a statement warning that the modern ‘attention economy’—characterized by a rapid, endless flow of content and the pursuit of clicks—is impacting both cognitive abilities and the depth of interpersonal relationships. The Pope’s message highlights how digital culture can foster superficiality, immediate reactions, and the tendency to label or reject others.

To counter these trends, the Pope calls for a ‘conversion of the gaze,’ urging people to rediscover a ‘hygiene of attention.’ He emphasizes that communication should not be about capturing or selling attention, but rather safeguarding it as a precious resource for genuine human connection and truth.
