China ordains Paolo Liu Honggang as Bishop of Datong

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Paolo Liu Honggang as the Bishop of the Diocese of Datong in China's Shanxi province. The appointment, approved on August 10, 2026, follows the established mechanisms of the provisional agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China. Liu, who was ordained on August 31, 2026, previously served as the diocesan administrator for Datong since 2005.

This ordination marks the third episcopal consecration in China within a two-month period and is the sixth such event during the current pontificate. The move is seen as a sign of the Pope's intention to maintain diplomatic dialogue with Beijing regarding clerical appointments.

Separately, Pope Leo XIV has dedicated his September 2026 prayer intention to the care of water. He described water as a 'universal gift' and a 'right without borders,' urging the faithful to protect the resource from pollution and waste while advocating for equitable access for those in need.
