Pope Leo XIV calls for AI disarmament and ban on lethal autonomous weapons

Pope Leo XIV has issued a formal call for the disarmament of artificial intelligence, urging nations to adopt concrete measures to prohibit lethal autonomous weapons systems. Speaking at a Vatican summit titled “The Future of AI: A Dialogue Between the Vatican and the Scientific World,” the Pontiff emphasized that decisions involving human life, liberty, and the use of force must remain under effective human supervision.

The Pope specifically addressed the upcoming Seventh Review Conference of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) scheduled for November 16 to 20, 2026, in Geneva. He urged participating states to take decisive action against autonomous weaponry.

During the dialogue, which included experts from the Future of Life Institute and various international researchers, Leo XIV rejected proposals to grant legal personality or rights to AI systems. He argued that treating machines as persons risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving victims to face a “faceless entity.” He maintained that machines are tools, not people, and lack the capacity for human experiences such as joy, pain, or responsibility.
