Pope Leo XIV calls for compromise to end war in Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV has called for compromise and courage in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, urging negotiators to be prepared to relinquish certain positions for the greater good of peace. During his four-day visit to France, the Pope described the conflict as a “new senseless slaughter” and expressed regret that war has returned to Europe.

Speaking in Metz, the Pope emphasized that international law and multilateralism serve as the “best antidote to the desire for domination,” which he identified as the root of modern conflicts. He warned against the illusion that increased military spending is the sole answer to security, questioning whether nations are investing in peace or merely preparing for future wars.

In Metz, the Pope also honored Robert Schuman, a founder of the European Union, by highlighting the importance of European integration and shared values such as the rule of law. French President Emmanuel Macron responded to the Pope’s remarks by pledging “unwavering” European support for Ukraine, noting that the continent is facing a return of imperialist ambitions.
