Pope Leo XIV calls for peace in Ukraine amid US diplomatic mission

Pope Leo XIV has issued a renewed appeal for peace in Ukraine, calling for an end to violence and destruction while urging all parties to open their hearts to dialogue. Speaking during the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff expressed deep sorrow over recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure, which have resulted in numerous innocent deaths.

Specifically, recent strikes in the Zaporizhzhia region left at least one person dead and 25 wounded. The Pope’s remarks coincide with high-level diplomatic efforts, including a mediation mission by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow before traveling to Kyiv.

The Pope expressed hope that these ongoing diplomatic attempts to resume negotiations will yield concrete results and create space for lasting diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
