Pope Leo XIV calls for AI regulation to protect human dignity

Pope Leo XIV addressed the International Catholic Legislators Network (ICLN) in the Vatican, emphasizing that artificial intelligence must serve the common good rather than diminish human dignity. Drawing from his encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas’, the Pope warned that rapid technological advancement presents a profound moral choice: humanity can either build a civilization where technology supports integral human development or create a ‘new Tower of Babel’ driven by power, efficiency, and control.

The Pope urged legislators to implement robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, and transparency to protect fundamental rights, privacy, and democratic institutions. He cautioned against the risk of AI becoming a tool for ‘ideological or economic colonialism,’ which could increase the dependence of poorer nations on wealthier ones.

Furthermore, Leo XIV highlighted concerns regarding the subtle domination of digital platforms that shape public discourse without accountability and the subordination of worker dignity to system optimization. He specifically called for protections to ensure AI does not erode the family unit, which he described as the ‘first school of humanity.’
