Pope Leo XIV calls for fidelity to Mass rubrics

Pope Leo XIV has issued a directive emphasizing that priests must remain faithful to the established texts and instructions of the Mass. In a letter addressed to Cardinal Arthur Roche, prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the pontiff called for respect toward the rites promulgated by Pope Saint Paul VI and Pope Saint John Paul II.

The Pope noted that this respect should stem from an inner attitude of humility and fidelity to ecclesial communion. He highlighted the necessity for both clergy and laity to receive ongoing liturgical formation to revitalize the liturgical life of the universal Church, referencing Pope Francis’ apostolic letter, Desiderio Desideravi.

The communication coincides with a conference on liturgical formation held at the Benedictine Abbey of Mount Angel in Oregon, organized by the Dicastery. The gathering, which includes cardinals, bishops, and laypeople, aims to engage in spiritual discernment and define practical proposals for liturgical practice.
