Pope Leo XIV calls for historical memory during WWII memorial blessing

Pope Leo XIV issued a blessing for the residents of Pescantina, near Verona, Italy, as they gathered to honor a monument dedicated to those deported and imprisoned during World War II.

During the Sunday Angelus prayer at St. Peter's Square, the Pontiff emphasized the necessity of preserving historical memory. He stated, “one must not forget history so as not to fall again into the errors of the past.” The Pope noted that the gift of peace suspends rivalries and unites people in gratitude, suggesting that society gains intelligence and a future when the law of love prevails over calculation.

Additionally, Leo XIV spoke on the importance of divine service and justice, warning against envy and division. He remarked that divine will often transcends human expectations, even for those who believe their achievements are solely the result of their own merit.
