Pope Leo XIV calls for historical rigor in sainthood processes
Pope Leo XIV has emphasized the necessity of historical rigor and authenticity in the Church's canonization processes. During an audience with participants of the 'Holiness in History' conference in Rome, the Pontiff stated that recognized holiness must be supported by 'authentic, credible testimonies free from all suspicion.'
The Pope highlighted the essential role of historical commissions, rapporteurs, and consultants, particularly when investigating ancient causes. He noted that while the goal of these investigations is not to produce historiography, rather to reveal the spirituality and exemplary nature of candidates, the use of the historical-critical method remains vital.
Reflecting on the legacy of Pope Pius XI, who established the Historical Section of the former Sacred Congregation of Rites, Leo XIV stressed that this rigorous verification must apply to both ancient and recent causes. He added that the profiles of saints may evolve through different eras, but they should interpret concrete experiences through the Gospel rather than following contemporary stereotypes.
