Pope Leo XIV calls for peace at the Taranto Mediterranean Games
Pope Leo XIV has issued a message of hope regarding the upcoming 20th Mediterranean Games, which are set to be hosted in Taranto. During his Angelus address, the Pontiff described the sporting event as a potential ‘prophecy of peace and brotherhood’ for the peoples of the Mediterranean region and the wider world.
The games will bring together delegations from various countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe. The Pope emphasized that the event should transcend mere athletic competition to serve as a concrete sign of unity and coexistence among diverse cultures.
Massimo Ferrarese, the extraordinary commissioner and president of the organizing committee, welcomed the Pope’s words. He noted that in a period of significant geopolitical tension, the games aim to serve as a platform for cultural dialogue and cooperation, with athletes acting as ambassadors for mutual respect.
