Pope Leo XIV calls for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV has called on the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to engage in peace negotiations and sit down at a common table to resolve the ongoing conflict. During a press conference, the Pope emphasized that the Vatican’s role is to serve as a voice for values rooted in human dignity.

While acknowledging that the Holy See lacks military power or political leverage comparable to nation-states, the Pope highlighted the Church's moral authority to remind the world of the human suffering, fear, and individual lives behind the frontline reports. He stated that the Church has a duty to advocate for human dignity even when diplomatic language becomes detached from the reality of the conflict.

The Vatican's position maintains that dialogue is essential, though the Pope noted that a call for conversation does not inherently resolve the conditions for a lasting peace. He stressed that any agreement must be evaluated by its actual outcomes and must be grounded in truth, responsibility, and permanent security guarantees to avoid being merely a pause before further violence.
