Pope Leo XIV urges urban evangelization and solidarity in August prayer
Pope Leo XIV dedicated the August prayer intention of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network to “evangelization in the city.” In the Angelus address he asked the faithful to pray that no one feels invisible in large urban centres, urging the Church to become a “community in sortie” that reaches the peripheries and offers daily bread to those in need. He warned that avarice is a disease of the soul, describing accumulation and waste as two faces of greed, and called for a renewed, creative faith expressed in simple, loving gestures.
The Pope highlighted that roughly 45 % of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, making cities the largest mission field of our time. United Nations data project Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, Delhi and Shanghai among the most‑populated megacities, underscoring the social challenges of anonymity and isolation that accompany rapid urban growth.
