Pope Leo XIV urges religious renewal amid declining vocations

Pope Leo XIV met with the Assembly of the Federation of Capuchin Poor Clare Nuns of Italy at the Vatican on September 21. During the audience, the Pontiff addressed the ongoing crisis of declining religious vocations and the shrinking size of contemplative communities.

Leo XIV cautioned against responding to these challenges through organizational strategies or recruitment campaigns. He stated that vocations do not arise from “the application of organizational strategies, nor from campaigns studied in class,” but rather from “prayer, familiarity with the Gospel, silence, the ability to accept oneself with one’s imperfections, and a sense of belonging to a whole that creates unity.”

Rather than viewing the decline as a reason for retreat or loss of autonomy, the Pope encouraged the nuns to see it as an opportunity for renewal. He urged them to focus on the “quality of the proposal” rather than numerical strength, fostering joyful and vibrant communities that offer authentic spiritual accompaniment in a society characterized by haste and noise.
