Pope Leo XIV calls for ecological conversion on World Day of Prayer

Pope Leo XIV has issued a message for the 11th World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, held on September 1, 2026. Using the biblical theme of forging swords into plowshares, the Pope called for an “authentic ecological conversion” to address the interconnected crises of war, social inequality, and environmental degradation.

During a Mass held at the Laudato si’ Ecological Centre in Castel Gandolfo, the Pope emphasized that armed conflicts cause long-term damage to both human societies and ecosystems. He noted that the destruction of the natural world and the violence of war are not separate issues but part of a single global cry for peace and healing.

The message urges individuals and nations to move away from destructive practices and toward tools that support life. The Pope encouraged believers to find moments of silence to listen to the “melodic voice of creation” and to take personal and collective responsibility for protecting the Earth’s original harmony.
