Pope Leo XIV’s Lampedusa visit calls on Europe to boost migrant support

Pope Leo XIV visited the Italian island of Lampedusa, delivering a mass at the “Gate of Europe” monument and a ceremony at a migrant cemetery. He urged European leaders to address the “momentous challenge” of migration by improving integration for newcomers and conditions in their countries of origin, noting that those who die at sea are victims of both action and inaction.

The visit was supported by Italian military and civil authorities. The Italian Military Ordinariate, local bishops, the Guardia di Finanza, Coast Guard, Carabinieri and over 150 civil‑protection volunteers from Sicily, including a team from Messina, provided security, logistics, and assistance throughout the event. The Pope emphasized the Church’s duty to welcome migrants while also stressing the need to work toward preventing forced migration.

The trip sparked discussion within the Italian episcopate about balancing unconditional hospitality with the Church’s longstanding teaching on supporting development in migrants’ home countries.
