Pope Leo XIV casts ballot in US midterm elections
Pope Leo XIV has become the first pontiff in history to participate in a secular democratic election by submitting a mail-in ballot for the United States midterm elections. The Chicago-born pontiff, born Robert Francis Prevost, is registered to vote in New Lenox, a suburb of Chicago, under his baptismal name.
The Vatican confirmed the development, stating that the Holy Father exercised his voting rights in accordance with his belief that citizens have both the right and responsibility to participate in democratic processes. This move marks a departure from the traditional political impartiality maintained by contemporary popes who also serve as heads of state.
Leo XIV has previously participated in both Republican and Democratic primary elections, as well as the 2024 US presidential election. Since his election to the papacy in May 2025, he has encouraged civic participation and addressed major public issues, including the conflict involving Israel and Iran.
