Pope Leo XIV convenes Extraordinary Consistory on AI, human dignity and peace

On June 26‑27, Pope Leo XIV gathered cardinals from around the world for an Extraordinary Consistory that emphasized synodal dialogue rather than top‑down decrees. The sessions featured roundtables, small language groups and open debates focused on the international situation, the quest for peace and the implications of the Pope’s new encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which addresses the preservation of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence and other technological transformations.

Cardinal Stephen Brislin of Johannesburg opened the third session, urging participants to consider how humanity builds its future amid powerful technologies. He highlighted the encyclical’s contrast between a Babel‑like self‑sufficient intelligence and a Jerusalem‑like intelligence serving God, stressing responsibility, limits, common good and discernment as a “grammar of construction” for a civilization of love.
