Pope Leo XIV criticizes AI-generated art to defend human creativity
Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong critique of artificial intelligence-generated art, distinguishing between human creativity and machine outputs. Speaking to artists and curators at the Vatican, the Pope argued that there is an “ontological difference” between true art and the products of statistical calculations used by AI.
He warned that AI-generated content is merely a rehash of existing data that can lead to the homogenization and censorship of expression, posing a “grave danger” to society. The Pope emphasized that while algorithms can imitate finished products, they lack the “human spark” found in authentic culture.
To safeguard human expression, the Catholic Church expressed a desire to renew its alliance with cultural institutions and artists. The Pope concluded by stating, “The Church needs you,” calling for a clear distinction between genuine human art and machine-generated content in the digital age.
