Pope Leo XIV Criticizes EU Migration Policies During Spain Visit

Pope Leo XIV made a six‑day apostolic journey to Spain from 6‑12 June 2026, stopping in Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands. In Gran Canaria he placed a floral tribute for migrants lost at sea and, addressing crowds, urged Europe to protect human dignity, saying “Human dignity has no passport.”

The visit coincided with the European Parliament’s adoption of new migration rules on 17 June 2026. The framework, dubbed the “Common system for the return of third‑country nationals staying illegally in the Union,” introduces fast‑track deportations, extends possible detention from 12 to 24 months for non‑cooperating migrants, and removes the automatic suspension of deportation pending an appeal.

Bishop Mariano Crociata, president of the European Bishops’ Commission (COMECE), warned that these measures risk weakening fundamental rights and the dignity of vulnerable persons. He called on EU authorities to keep asylum and border policies grounded in respect for human rights, family unity and special care for the most vulnerable.
