Pope Leo XIV declares Guadalupan Jubilee Year for Mexico

Pope Leo XIV has declared a Guadalupan Jubilee Year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the New Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the transfer of the sacred image to the current site. The jubilee period will run from October 12, 2026, to October 12, 2027.

Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes of the Archdiocese of Mexico announced that the celebration serves as part of a broader pastoral path leading toward 2031, which will mark the 500th anniversary of the Guadalupan event. During this jubilee, pilgrims visiting the sanctuary will be eligible to receive a plenary indulgence under normal conditions.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City, is one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world, attracting an estimated 20 million pilgrims annually.
