Pope Leo XIV declares Jubilee Year for Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Pope Leo XIV has declared a Jubilee Year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The announcement was made by the Archdiocese of Mexico City on September 9, 2026.

Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes stated that the jubilee was granted through the Apostolic Penitentiary. The celebration will mark both the basilica's dedication and the transfer of the image of Mary to the ‘camarin’ behind the main altar, allowing for private veneration of the miraculous mantle.

Built in 1976 near Tepeyac Hill, the basilica is Catholicism’s most popular Marian shrine, attracting approximately 20 million visitors annually. The Jubilee Year is set to begin on October 12, marking the 131st anniversary of the pontifical coronation of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
