Pope Leo XIV defends Vatican II liturgical reform
Pope Leo XIV addressed the motivations behind the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council during a general audience at St. Peter's Basilica. He emphasized that the reform is rooted in the Church's living tradition and was intended to ensure that the faithful participate in the liturgy “consciously and actively,” rather than as “strangers and silent spectators.”
Drawing on a 1962 letter from Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, the Pope noted that the faithful's material presence must not be accompanied by spiritual absence. He explained that while certain elements of the liturgy are divine and immutable, others are human and subject to development over time to meet the needs of different eras.
The Pontiff also warned against liturgical abuses that have occurred in the post-conciliar period, noting that some principles of the reform have been misunderstood or taken to extremes. He called upon bishops and priests to safeguard the liturgy, ensuring it maintains a “noble simplicity” that fosters a true relationship with God.
