Pope Leo XIV expresses grief over deadly Colombia earthquake
Pope Leo XIV has expressed profound grief following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia, causing significant casualties and destruction. In a telegram sent via Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to Archbishop Francisco Javier Múnera Correa, the Pope described himself as “deeply pained” by the tragedy.
The earthquake has resulted in at least 224 deaths and more than 600 injuries, with many individuals still missing. The disaster caused extensive material damage across the central and western regions of the country, impacting hospitals, airports, public services, transportation systems, and numerous churches.
The Pope offered prayers for the deceased and for the recovery of those affected, while extending condolences to the families of the victims. He also expressed gratitude to the emergency responders and rescue teams working with “generous dedication” to provide assistance and search for survivors.
