Pope Leo XIV expresses sorrow over Colombian earthquake

Pope Leo XIV has expressed his profound sorrow following a powerful earthquake in Colombia that has caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction. Through a telegram sent by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to the Colombian Episcopal Conference, the Pope offered his condolences to the families of the victims and requested prayers for the recovery of the injured.

The earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 7.4, has heavily impacted the central and western regions of the country. Reports indicate at least 132 to 169 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Major damage has been reported to infrastructure, including hospitals, airports, public services, and transportation systems, as well as numerous churches and buildings.

Casualties are concentrated in cities such as Cali, Pereira, Manizales, and Quibdó. In Pereira, located in the Coffee Axis, at least 60 deaths have been recorded. The seismic event was also felt in neighboring Venezuela, Panama, and parts of Ecuador. The Pope also expressed gratitude to the rescue workers and volunteers dedicated to search and relief efforts.
