Pope Leo XIV, First American Pontiff, Featured on Vatican Coins and Collectible Art

Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American to hold the papacy after Pope Francis’s death. The election was confirmed on May 8 2025 when white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel.

To commemorate the historic pontificate, the Vatican released a new set of euro‑denominated collector coins that display Pope Leo XIV’s portrait, the first Vatican coins to feature a pope’s face since 2014. The coins are legal tender throughout the euro‑zone.

Separately, the Bradford Exchange launched a framed art print of Pope Leo XIV with a golden medallion, sized nearly a foot wide, marketed as a religious collectible and gift.
