Pope Leo XIV undergoes surgery to remove lung tumor
Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a malignant tumor from the lower lobe of his right lung at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. The Pontiff had personally announced the upcoming procedure during the Angelus on Sunday, October 11, a move that surprised many outside his inner circle.
Medical reports indicate the diagnosis may have originated from an incidental finding during an abdominal MRI on September 14. Following the surgery, doctors report that the Pope’s post-operative evolution is normal, noting he has already been able to walk and eat. The global Catholic community is currently awaiting biopsy results to determine if the cancer has spread.
Faithful from around the world have gathered to pray for his recovery. In Rome, pilgrims have congregated at the Gemelli Polyclinic, while organized prayer services have been held at the Vatican’s Santa Ana parish. In the Pope’s hometown of Chicago, local clergy and parishioners expressed both concern and hope, viewing the medical event as a moment of spiritual significance.
