Pope Leo XIV issues encyclical on AI and human dignity

Pope Leo XIV has released a new encyclical titled ‘Magnifica humanitas: on the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence’. The document addresses the ethical challenges posed by rapid technological advancement and the need to safeguard human dignity.

In the text, the Pope compares the regulation of AI to nuclear disarmament, stating that artificial intelligence must be ‘disarmed’ from logics that turn it into an instrument of dominance, exclusion, and death. He emphasizes that technological decisions must remain connected to conscience and responsibility, ensuring that AI serves the common good rather than becoming a tool for oppression.

The encyclical explores themes such as the relationship between the individual and the community, the value of work during digital transitions, and the importance of truth and democracy in a digital era. It calls for an ‘ecology of communication’ and an educational alliance to navigate the digital age while maintaining humanistic values.
