Pope Leo XIV issues first encyclical on technocracy and human dignity

Pope Leo XIV has released his first encyclical, ‘Magnifica humanitas’, which examines the technocratic nature of modern society and the challenges posed by rapid technological progress. The document addresses the profound shifts caused by artificial intelligence and the digital revolution, emphasizing the need to place human dignity at the center of technical advancement.

The encyclical warns of a growing disconnect between power and accountability. It notes that as decision-making processes become increasingly mediated by complex institutions and private corporations, the actual holders of power become harder to discern. This phenomenon makes it difficult to govern or direct technology toward the common good.

Drawing on the philosophical insights of Romano Guardini, the text suggests that true power requires a conscious holder with a clear purpose. The Pope calls for a ‘civilization of love’ based on justice, dialogue, and shared responsibility as an alternative to a culture of power and war, framing the current era as a decisive historical crossroads for humanity.
